I just joined FM after the 2007 NaNoWriMo. Within 24 hours several people (official) "newbie helpers" and just regular participants sent me responses to my introduction.
I think it is important to write as long and as detailed an introduction as you can, sharing with them who you are and what you are looking for. That way people have a point of reference and can respond in a meaningful way.

The amount of information on the site IS overwhelming, but I've registered and I look forward to sinking my teeth in. I'd heard about the site through Holly Lisle's website. I've never read any of her books, but her site has a number of great articles for writers (http://hollylisle.com/fm/).
